Internship In Runes Studio
Platform: PC
Engine: UE4
Team Size: 6
Role: Technical Game Designer
Period: June 2021 - August 2021
Internship Supervisor: Mathias Chataignier
What I Did: Game Design, Level Design, Blueprint Development
This internship was a bit special because of the COVID pandemic I did it entirely remotely. Despite that, it was a really interesting experience where I learned a lot by practicing many skills I don't always have the opportunity to practice at school.
The project on which I worked was the demo the studio was making to get funds from investors. The concept is a fun arena brawler in which you slay waves of enemies using the abilities of your character with some battle royal mechanics, in a cartoony universe.
I apologize in advance, I don't have visuals for this project.
My Missions - Development
I used the UE4 blueprints and behavior tree to develop several features such as:
-
Basic enemy AI (that had to be a foundation to build upon) with movements and an attack system
-
A wave spawn system to make the enemies spawn
-
Inventory system for the consumables of the player
-
The Item spawn system in the arena
My Missions - Level Design
-
I was tasked with designing an arena so that we could test the features that were developed more easily
-
After modifying it according to the feedback I made a blockout with basic meshes
-
And finally, I built the level with assets from an asset pack
My Missions - Game Design
I had 2 types of missions: designing mechanics and systems and creating the documentation on Notion.
The mechanics I designed where:
-
The Enemy spawn system
-
Various Items/Trap effects for the player
-
The Item spawn system
-
An attack system for the different enemies with combos and different attacks
I made documentation for the following systems:
-
all the mechanics I designed above
-
the controls and abilities for the player
-
the death zone system
-
the animation list for the prototype
-
the asset list for the arena
